Why We Love This French Onion Chicken Recipe
Chicken breast cooked in French onion soup, topped with a layer of melted Swiss cheese, and plenty of croutons to add to the hearty crunch. It’s like the soup but better, and it’s so easy to make. You only need one pan and 5 ingredients, and you’re good to go!
Variations on French Onion Chicken Casserole
The best cheeses for this chicken are nutty, rich melting cheeses. I like Swiss, but Gruyere also works well. For the croutons, you can use store-bought or make your own from leftover no knead bread!
How to Store and Reheat
Store leftover French onion chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in a cast-iron skillet or baking pan in a 350°F oven for 20-30 minutes, until heated through. You may place it under a broiler for a few minutes to remelt the cheese.
How to Freeze
Freeze French onion chicken in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Let thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Serving Suggestions
The chicken is the star of the show, so keep the side dishes simple. Just serve it over a bed of basmati rice or add in a roasted vegetable mix. For an extra flavor kick, try adding in some caramelized onions.

Love chicken, love swiss cheese, and love onion soup, can’t wait to try this out! Sounds so yummy and love that it is soooo easy, as I am always rushed for time. Thanks for the great idea!
I have to tell you that the recipe for the French onion chicken was the bomb! I sauteed a few extra onions as we like a good amount in our dishes. I also am a huge cheese lover and used the swiss but added provolone cheese too. Gawd! It was just delish! Thanks for such a great dinner idea. PS. You are so cute!!
I made this for dinner tonight and it really quick to put together and was delicious soo full of flavour!
Yummy can’t wait to serve this to my VFW.
What do you think about using cream of onion soup? It has pieces of onion in it. I also have it on hand in the cupboard.
My husband and I really liked this. Very tasty
This is now one of my go to dishes. I’ve also experimented with the recipe. Used more soup or less chicken and added veggies, sometimes I finish it in the oven (and it all ties together perfectly). I never would have thought to use FOS like this. Thank you!!
Just made this delicious, flavorful goodness. I loved every bite. The problems with your recipes are I want to eat all of the dishes I make by myself. A little selfish I know but on the other hand I want to let everyone else try them too. I hate depriving others of good cooking lol. Next I will make the strawberry donuts for my team (my excuse to make them). I am sure we will love those too. ;)
Already Made this once it went over so well my Husband asked for it again. Perfect recipe for fall Thank you!
I’m making this (again!) Tonight. It’s soooo good. I’ve been trying quite a few of your recipes out lately, and when I’m cooking, my guy will ask if I’m cooking one of the recipe ladys recipes lol. He loves all of them! Thanks for all the great easy recipes
I can’t even tell you how happy this comment made me. Seriously, THANK YOU!!! I’m so glad you love the recipes and the thought that they actually get requested is crazy cool to me. Thanks for letting me know, have a fabulous week!!
