I love making treats for my dogs, and these oat and apple dog pretzels are no exception. They’re super simple to make with just 4 ingredients, and the pretzel shape is ridiculously cute! I first made these treats for my soul dog, Scout, and I still love making them for my current pups, Mabel and Daisy. Every dog deserves treats made with love!

When I first started my cooking journey, I got really into reading the ingredients on everything. I was honestly so shocked at what was in the treats I was buying for Scout, and I got right to work developing some quick and easy homemade dog treats. These oat and apple dog pretzels are so simple to make with just 4 ingredients, and I know exactly what I’m giving to my fur babies. They’re healthy with no added fat or sugar– a perfect treat for pups!

What’s in This Dog Pretzel Recipe?

  • Egg: Helps bind the treats together. I like free-range eggs best.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: Adds moisture to the treats. It’s super important to look for an applesauce with just one ingredient– apples! We don’t want any sugar or cinnamon here.
  • Oat Flour: Helps give the treats structure.
  • Rolled Oats: Add texture and fiber to the treats.

Tips for Success

  • These pretzels are a treat and are not meant to replace your dogs’ meals.
  • Allow the treats to fully cool before giving them to your furry friend.
  • I use gluten-free flour and oats. Just like humans, dogs can be sensitive to gluten, so I like to err on the side of caution.

How to Store

These oat and apple dog pretzels will keep well for up to 2 weeks. Let them cool completely and keep them stored at room temperature in an airtight container to keep them fresh. Preferably place them in a high cupboard where inquisitive noses can’t reach!

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg 50 grams
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce 250 grams
  • 2 cups gluten-free oat flour 240 grams
  • ¾ cup gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats 75 grams

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Using a hand whisk, beat the egg and set it aside.
    1 large egg
  • Combine the applesauce, oat flour, and rolled oats in a large bowl. Pour all but 1 tablespoon of the egg over the mixture and set aside the remaining 1 tablespoon of egg.
1 cup unsweetened applesauce, 2 cups gluten-free oat flour, ¾ cup gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats
  • Using a wooden spoon, stir the mixture until a dough forms. The dough should be tacky but not overly sticky. Add a bit more or less flour if necessary.
  • Take a 2-tablespoon-sized piece of dough (approximate) and roll it into a tube. It should be about 10 inches long and about the width of a pencil.
  • Take each tube and make into a U shape, then twist the ends together and fold back to the top. This makes the pretzel shape. Pinch the ends in to make sure they’re secure.
  • Place the pretzels onto the baking tray. Brush the top of each pretzel with the remaining egg.
  • Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes, until they're slightly browned and become crispy. The pretzels should be pretty hard, just like pups love them!
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool before serving.

I made these with Bob’s Red Mill rice flour. The dough wouldn’t hold together enough to make pretzels so I made round cookies instead. I also stuck a sliver of apple in them. I think my dogs liked the brushed egg on top and the chewiness from the oats.. Good, simple recipe, thanks!

I’m making this for my dog and two more dogs who will be visiting my family for Christmas. Can humans eat this as well?

I have been lucky to have 5 great loves in my life of the doggie family. My current love is a black lab/German shorthair cross. Can’t wait to make her these special treats. I also have a couple of horses who I think would love these too. I will let you know after I make them if the horses dig them as much. Thanks for posting this.

Well it took me awhile to get back here and post but these were a success with both dogs and horses. The worse thing I see about them is they all want them all the time so that means lots of kitchen duty for me. Of course who can resist those cute faces. Thanks again for this recipe its the only one I use now.
