I love making treats for my dogs, and these oat and apple dog pretzels are no exception. They’re super simple to make with just 4 ingredients, and the pretzel shape is ridiculously cute! I first made these treats for my soul dog, Scout, and I still love making them for my current pups, Mabel and Daisy. Every dog deserves treats made with love!

When I first started my cooking journey, I got really into reading the ingredients on everything. I was honestly so shocked at what was in the treats I was buying for Scout, and I got right to work developing some quick and easy homemade dog treats. These oat and apple dog pretzels are so simple to make with just 4 ingredients, and I know exactly what I’m giving to my fur babies. They’re healthy with no added fat or sugar– a perfect treat for pups!
What’s in This Dog Pretzel Recipe?
- Egg: Helps bind the treats together. I like free-range eggs best.
- Unsweetened Applesauce: Adds moisture to the treats. It’s super important to look for an applesauce with just one ingredient– apples! We don’t want any sugar or cinnamon here.
- Oat Flour: Helps give the treats structure.
- Rolled Oats: Add texture and fiber to the treats.
Tips for Success
- These pretzels are a treat and are not meant to replace your dogs’ meals.
- Allow the treats to fully cool before giving them to your furry friend.
- I use gluten-free flour and oats. Just like humans, dogs can be sensitive to gluten, so I like to err on the side of caution.
How to Store
These oat and apple dog pretzels will keep well for up to 2 weeks. Let them cool completely and keep them stored at room temperature in an airtight container to keep them fresh. Preferably place them in a high cupboard where inquisitive noses can’t reach!

Oat and Apple Dog Pretzels Recipe
Equipment
- Kitchen Scale (optional)
Ingredients
- 1 large egg 50 grams
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce 250 grams
- 2 cups gluten-free oat flour 240 grams
- ¾ cup gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats 75 grams
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Using a hand whisk, beat the egg and set it aside.1 large egg
- Combine the applesauce, oat flour, and rolled oats in a large bowl. Pour all but 1 tablespoon of the egg over the mixture and set aside the remaining 1 tablespoon of egg.1 cup unsweetened applesauce, 2 cups gluten-free oat flour, ¾ cup gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats
- Using a wooden spoon, stir the mixture until a dough forms. The dough should be tacky but not overly sticky. Add a bit more or less flour if necessary.
- Take a 2-tablespoon-sized piece of dough (approximate) and roll it into a tube. It should be about 10 inches long and about the width of a pencil.
- Take each tube and make into a U shape, then twist the ends together and fold back to the top. This makes the pretzel shape. Pinch the ends in to make sure they’re secure.
- Place the pretzels onto the baking tray. Brush the top of each pretzel with the remaining egg.
- Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes, until they're slightly browned and become crispy. The pretzels should be pretty hard, just like pups love them!
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool before serving.

Made these for my dog, she loved them!
I love to hear that!! SO glad she loves them!
Can these be frozen? My dog is only six pounds so eating this whole reciepe in 2 wks would be impossible.Looks very tasty and I am sure Peaches would love them but not as her whole diet for 2 weeks
I’ve never frozen them but I imagine they would be just fine for a couple months! I hope Peaches loves them! (cute!!)
sounds like a yummy recipe! I bake my fur baby cookies all the time and he loves them! But if I may ask, what would one use if they don’t have applesauce? Is there a way to use actual apples or can you try using something else like peanut butter instead?
You could totally use peanut butter! My dog would love that!
My sweet boy Oliver (also a yellow lab) has multiple allergies. It has been a challenge. The local PetSmart has two treats that he can eat (I spent a couple hours reading every bag). This recipie fit his diet restriction perfectly. And he loves them. I have to say they aren’t bad, I tried a bite. Thanks for taking the time to share. If you come up with any other goodies that use only oat flour/oatmeal I would love to try them. He can’t have corn, wheat, barley or rice. I love baking for him and he loves it when I bake for him.
Oh my gosh I love this comment!!! (I took a bite too) lol!! Means so much that your sweet boy loved these! I plan on trying out more treats in the future so stay tuned! I really want to focus on ingredients that are good for dogs that are actually easy to get!! Thanks again, made my day :)
Oh my goodness, scout is so adorable! I would have bought him too! Don’t blame A1 And these treats, what dog could resist!

Ok, these are exactly what I was looking for for dog treat bags. We’re having a party at the dog park and I already have bone shape cookie cutters that I’ve made treats with a million times. The pretzel twist is such an awesome idea!! Thanks!
I love our dog treat cutter too, but these were a fun change, Hope your fur baby loves them!
It looks like a great recipe. My two dogs love apples so I will bake some for them :-)
