No 4th of July celebration is complete without a fun and festive cocktail. This red, white, and blue margarita slush is the perfect refreshing drink to cheers with during fireworks. I layered three different delicious flavors of margarita slush to create these beauties, and they’re truly so impressive!

I blended tequila, lime, Cointreau, and a host of other goodies together to turn these frozen margaritas into a flavor fiesta. The red layer has a great berry flavor, the white layer is a classic margarita, and the blue layer is deliciously orangey.

What’s in This Margarita Slush Recipe?

  • Frozen Strawberries: Add delicious strawberry flavor and a lovely red color to the red layer.
  • Tequila: I prefer blanco tequila for this recipe. I used El Mayor, but any brand will work.
  • Cointreau: Adds orange flavor to all three layers.
  • Grenadine: Enhances the red color of the red layer and adds subtle pomegranate flavor.
  • Lime Juice: Adds freshness and acidity to all three layers. I highly recommend using freshly-squeezed lime juice over bottled.
  • Agave Nectar: Adds a subtle sweetness to the white layer. You can also use honey if you prefer.
  • Blue Curaçao: Enhances the orange flavor of the blue layer and adds the distinctive electric blue color.

Tips for Success

  • Make your blender’s job a bit easier by making your frozen drink with crushed or cracked ice instead of whole cubes. This is especially useful if you have an older, less powerful blender.
  • Warm – or even room-temperature – ingredients will melt your ice quicker, and you’ll need to add more ice to get that nice, thick, slushy consistency. This will dilute the flavor. So chill your other ingredients where possible.
  • If you leave the blender running for too long you’ll end up with a drink that is too thin and runny.
  • You may want more lime or a bit less alcohol, etc. depending on you and your guests’ preferences. Have a taste of each layer as you blend it, so you can adjust accordingly for the perfect frozen cocktail!

Serving Suggestions

To finish off this margarita slush recipe, you can salt the rim of the glass before pouring in the layers. A salty rim works great with the tequila and balances the sweetness of the cocktail perfectly. All you need is lime juice and some coarse sea salt. Moisten the rim of the glass with a lime wedge, then dip the rim onto a small plate of coarse sea salt and twist. The lime juice will allow the sea salt to stick to the glass.
