Homemade Rum vs. Mulled Wine

This spiced rum recipe is similar to mulled wine except it packs more of a punch. Spiced rum is a rum-based drink infused with fruits, spices, and sweeteners. The infusion happens for a few days, later it is drained and used in various cocktail recipes. It’s mostly served chilled.

Mulled wine is a wine-based drink infused with spices and fruity flavors. Sometimes rum is even added to it. It’s a warm drink that is often served in colder months.

What is the Difference between rum and spiced rum?

Light rum is white or clear and typically called silver rum. Dark rum is aged longer and spiced rum typically has additives like caramel, orange peel, brown sugar, vanilla, molasses, spices, and colorings. It has a sweeter and more robust taste.

How to Store

Spiced Rum will keep indefinitely. Be sure to store in an airtight, glass container and in a dark, dry place. You can leave the spices in the drink itself, rum will keep infusing. Since it is homemade, keep checking time to time.

Serving Suggestions

I love hearty comfort food like prime rib and red wine pot roast with this homemade rum. For vegetarians go with burgundy mushrooms. If you’re looking for beefy flavors pair it with beef tenderloin!

Is there a difference between cardamom and black cardamom? Also could you just use regular clear rum?

Hi Joanne, black cardamom has a more intense taste than green cardamom. We have not tried this recipe with clear rum, but it certainly could work. Keep in mind that the flavor of clear rum is much different than aged/dark rum!

Hi Chris, we recommend using an aged rum, not a spiced rum!

Can you use ground nutmeg instead of grating it fresh? Would you maybe use less or more?

Sorry to ask something silly – but with the orange peel strips – I get how long they are – but how wide?!

If I took a medium sized orange, how many “strips” would it make – then I can work it out. Again, sorry to be so dense but I am not sure of a strip is 1/4 inch wide or an inche wide!5 stars

@Rufus and Simon, I’d say discard the pod and keep the seeds. I’ve learned this generally speaking the hard way 😂

Do you crack the cardamom or put it in whole?
