Notes from the Test Kitchen

  • Day-old bread works best for French toast bakes, because the slight staleness allows it to soak up all of the egg mixture overnight, without getting soggy. I like using Brioche for this recipe!
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight (for at least 8 hours) before baking.

5-Star Review

IF you’re super lazy could you use apple pie filling? If so how would the recipe need to be adjusted? Thinking this would be a great Easter morning treat😁

I am by myself so I scaled this down ~ 1/3 and used a 1 qt Corning casserole. I had some potatoe rolls leftover so I used those. I used only about 3 T. of sugar for the whole recipe…otherwise this would be waaaay too sweet for me. I topped it with maple syrup and whipped cream. Perfect!

You don’t need to buy pie spice…that’s just cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice…grind it fresh if you’ve got it.

This would be fun to try in the summer when peaches are ripe…really, any pie you can imagine (pecan!) would work.5 stars

Does it matter if the bread isn’t exactly a day old? Like what if it’s a couple days?
