I’ve been getting more and more into making my own homemade dog treats, and my pups can’t seem to get enough! These sweet potato dog biscuits make a huge batch that costs even less than store-bought treats, and they’re made with healthy ingredients with no preservatives or additives.
What’s in This Sweet Potato Dog Biscuit Recipe?
- Sweet Potatoes: Mashed cooked sweet potatoes add moisture and texture to these treats, plus they’re loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber! Plain pumpkin puree also works well here.
- Eggs: Help bind the treats together. I like free-range eggs best.
- Unsweetened Applesauce: Adds moisture to the treats. It’s super important to look for an applesauce with just one ingredient– apples! We don’t want any sugar or cinnamon here.
- Whole Wheat Flour: Gives these treats structure. I like whole wheat for the added nutrition, but other types of flours also work.
Tips for Success
- Always remove the skin of the sweet potatoes, as these can be difficult for your dog to digest.
- You can peel the sweet potatoes and cook them in boiling water until tender, or you can roast them and then peel them. Then, you just need to mash them up and mix them with the other ingredients.
- I used a bone-shaped cookie cutter for these treats, but you can use whatever you have to hand.
- Let the treats cool fully before giving them to your dog or storing them.
- These are treats and not meant to replace your dog’s regular meals.
How to Store
Store leftover sweet potato dog biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, in the refrigerator for up to 2 months, or in the freezer for up to 8 months. Let thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

- 1 cup cooked mashed sweet potatoes
- 2 eggs
- ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2½ cups whole wheat flour plus more for rolling dough
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Add the sweet potatoes, eggs, and applesauce to a large mixing bowl and mix well. Stir in the flour. The mixture will be stiff and sometimes it's easier to mix with your hands than to bend a metal spoon.1 cup cooked mashed sweet potatoes, 2 eggs, ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce, 2½ cups whole wheat flour
- Divide the dough in half and roll onto a surface covered with additional flour until about ⅛-inch thick.
- Use a cookie cutter to cut shapes and place them onto an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until dry and crispy. Remove from oven. let stand on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before removing to completely cool on a cooling rack.
- Serve when cooled or store in a sealed container in the refrigerator until ready to use.
