What’s in these 3-Ingredient Cat Treats?
You only need 3 ingredients to make these healthy homemade cat treats. And you might already have them all in your pantry!
- Salmon: Use canned salmon for this recipe, or another canned fish.
- Egg: Beat the yolk and whites together before combining with the flour.
- Flour: I recommend using whole wheat flour for these nutritious cat treats.
I love that these are real food ingredients, so I know my cat, Dill, is getting the best of the best!
It was such an honor to have this cat treats recipe printed in the August 2015 edition of Family Circle Magazine.
Any canned, oily fish will work in this recipe, and your kitty will thank you for being so creative. Try tuna, mackerel, or even canned shrimp! You can also substitute canned chicken.
If you want the goldfish shaped cutter I used, Here’s my affiliate link to get one. If you prefer, use any cookie cutter that is about 3/4-inch.
Add up to 1/3 cup of water to the dough if it’s too dry. If it’s too wet or sticky, add in a small amount of flour until you get the right consistency. It should be tacky but not sticky.
They should be slightly brown and crunchy on the outside.
How to Store Homemade Cat Treats
Let the treats cool completely before storing. Scoop them into an airtight container, like a mason jar, or resealable bags. Store them at room temperature or in the pantry, for up to 2 weeks.
They’ll be ready to hand out to your furry friend any time they need a treat. And these are healthy enough for them to eat (many) every day, so you can feel good about spoiling them!

Hello, I was wondering if I can use rice flour? All out of wheat here.
Thanks much!
You can give it a shot!
Can I use a blender if I don’t have a food processor?
Why yes you can, Izzy!
Do these cookies need to be refrigerated after baking?
They just need to be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks!
Hi. So excited to try these. Just confirming they do not require refrigeration as long as stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks right?
Correct :)
Can these be frozen? I want to make these for Christmas gifts. I have to make for 4 cats. I would like to make ahead of time.
Yes, absolutely!
I made these for my kitty, Mango, who loves anything fishy and wont eat chicken or beef treats or food. He loves them! I used all purpose flour as it was what I had on hand and it still worked fine. I also froze half of the batter in a ball wrapped in parchment paper to save for later, as I had about 80 treats made already and didn’t want them to be wasted. Both the kitty and the dogs were very curious at the smell from the oven and wanted treats as soon as they were out.
Happy to make your furry family, happy!
We only have one cat so we 1/4 the recipe and we used canned tuna. Our cat (and dog) loved them! And my son liked making them :) Thank you! We’ll make those often.
Fun for the whole family! I’m so glad everyone enjoyed it!
Thanks for the post, Kelly ~ my cat is not a fan of salmon but tuna-yum!!
Becky! Please tell me where to find the 3/4 cookie cutter. I’ve been searching on the web 2 days, and smallest I can find is 3″ Please help me! My cat “Zeus” loves salmon, tuna etc. I want to make these for him. I just stroll though all your comments to see if you message me about the fish cutter from the last time time I message you. “PLEASE” Thanks Janet
A small medicine cup works in a pinch!
Just use a thimble.
I just used my pizza cutter and had them all cut in less than a minute!
Easy-peasy! And, trust me, the cats dont care!
Could use an apple corer.
Hello. What about baking a thin sheet of batter and then using a pizza cutter after treats are baked to cut into small cubes. I got a batch with sardines in the oven now. Thanks for having a recipe. There aren’t many on the web.
Where can I get the little fish treat cutter?
Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or searching online is your best bet!
The cutter is for us. Seriously, the cats don’t care. =^..^=. Just use a thimble. Works perfectly!
Hi I just found your website and seen you make kitty cookies why the wheat flour and not reg flour
Regular flour is just usually highly processed!
My cat absolutely loved these! Just a warning to anyone plans to make these: Your house is going to smell like cat food for awhile, so light a candle or something. In addition, this will make A LOT… I would suggest if you only have 1-2 cats to cut this recipe down to maybe 1/2 or even a 1/4. Other than that, my cat loved these. Rubbing and meowing even before they came out of the oven!
How awesome!! I’m glad your cat loved it!
